[glow=red,2,300]Zapper 51[/glow] Having started just a little while ago I have purchased my very first mech BlackJack BJ-3. Starting to get some ideas 'bout how to ride this thing and tried out a couple of builds by now. (all criticism is very welcome).
OMG what were you thinking: While sniper builds, either LLas or PPC based are nice, I find myself at medium ranges more often then not hence I am trying out something that will allow me to use my BJ-3 to its full potential.
This build is aimed to address a full-energy mech heat problem while maximizing DPS, which I believe it does well with 6 medium lasers being able to blaze away sustained by 51% heat dissipation. This variant only has 1 JJ but can be equipped with full 4xJJ if AMS is taken out. Single JJ is not a lot but still something while AMS could prove to be quite useful in brawls.
Disclaimer: This is my very first mech I own in MWO as well as my first presence on the forum, if you think my build is total noobishness you might just be right
Welcome to mechspecs.com I think you have a neat build here. your going for DPS, not alpha. I like the AMS on it as well, but your not fast enough to stay out of trouble. The BJ-1X has that speed, but not the JJ. Also, you don't have to show the armor in the title of the build. I might just run a compromise of your build, so your have jj and ams. Just some advice, keep a coolshot handy, those hot maps are a pain to shut down on!
Thank you Vergere, both for a welcome and most of all much needed tips :] I have completely overlooked coolshot till now. Loosing 2% of heat dissipation seems like a good trade for more manoeuvrability, I'll definitely give it a go
Welcome to Mechspecs as well! The BJ-3 is one of my favorite mechs and I think a pretty great mech to start out on. I'd definitely give up the one DHS (or the AMS) for additional JJs - especially since you're a brawler build. Sometimes you just need to get away and the only way out is over a building or canyon wall. You'll definitely notice an increase to your survivability with three jump jets. This is a great way to introduce yourself to the BJ-3 as well. I think you'll notice over time that you'll take a lot of CT hits and die to a cored CT most of the time, even if you're good at twisting damage across your mech. You'll probably want to upgrade to an XL235 down the road and slap some larges or PPCs in there to really make this mech live up to its full potential. But, in the meantime you should definitely be racking up the kills and c-bills and having a good time with all the pew pew.
I like this STD-Build. I also like the high amount of heatsinks! I recommend to us 2x JJs to jump faster out of trouble (over obstacles/back to cover):
This is basically my favorite build for the BJ-3 as well, though I go for max JJs, with a slight armor loss. http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=80&l=7cd54b3814e755ec69f40e7c0893ca135516b946 There's no doubt in my mind that this build ranks among the best of the mediums, so long as the pilot can handle the heat. Even on hot maps such as Caustic it can handle quite well:
This was one of the best matches I've played in a long time, and it was with this build. Straight off we lost our four lights who went to scout around just below the mountain, and ended up running full-tilt into the entire enemy team (except one Stalker who was off on the tower sniping with ERLLs.) So the rest of us, instead of rushing off to handle that lone Stalker, decided to turn and actually face the 10 enemies coming up behind us. It was a close H2H brawl, with both sides taking losses. In the end, we emerged from the battle victorious, with just myself and two friendlies remaining (one of whom was actually stripped of all his weapons). But, besides the disconnect standing at their base amongst all their turrets, the enemy still had that lone Stalker who'd been sniping from the tower the entire match. But unfortunately for myself and my friends, he was no longer at the tower by the time the battle in the valley was over. He ended up getting the drop on us by popping over a ridge unexpectedly, and as it turned out, he had four SSRM2s loaded alongside his 4 ERLLs. He killed both my friendlies straight off, and had both my legs and my CT opened up by the time I managed to tuck over a ridge to (temporary) safety. A quick pause to check my surroundings, and I immediately headed off to the side in an attempt to flank around behind without him noticing. And it worked. As he strutted off across the plateau in an attempt to find me, (as that was the direction he had last seen me in), I was gradually coming up on him from behind. The clock was already down to roughly 2 minutes by the time I started my flanking attempt, and now, by the time I was bearing down on him from behind, there was less than 60 seconds left in the game. But since I was already cored out in both my CT and my legs, there was no way I could let him turn and fire on me. (It would have been a great time to have loaded an Arty Strike, but sadly, only hindsight is 20/20.) So I waited until there was barely 30 seconds left, and I was a mere 300 meters behind him, before I opened fire with an alpha to his rear CT. The outer armor stripped off nicely, but sadly, his interior remained intact. So I quickly tried to jump over his head as he turned on me. But he managed to acquire a lock as I was overhead, and his Sreaks and Lasers took out one of my legs. I just managed to put one last alpha into his (front) CT before he cored out mine, and the match was over, with 14 seconds left on the clock. If you managed to bear with me during my long narration, thanks for listening! If you just want to see how the match ended, though, here's the screenshot:
