Does anyone know how it is being implemented into the game? I've heard various rumours but I've yet to see any concrete info on the exact mechanics of it?

that is still a ways down the road. If you listen to last weeks town hall meeting, Russ mentions the use of the Team Speak Dev Kit, and how they are going to be using that system to make VOIP in game possible.

The town hall meeting is a little vague on it, except that it will use the Teamspeak SDK as a built in VOIP. No need for external software and it will not interfere with any TS software already running. They will implement the ability to mute players aswell.

That's about all we know at the moment I think.

And the mute ability is the thing I like best...I'm happy to have in-game VOIP so long as I can mute anyone who's too much of a jackoff to be allowed access to it ;)

Not sure so much about the question, but I have this to say about voip lately:

I've been playing a lot of CS:GO again lately and I HATE Voip in solo casual play. Everyone just yells and it's really loud. Very annoying. however in the Competitive queue (group queue) it's very useful and people respect their privilege to speak. Seeing how well it works in CS:GO comp queue, I have high hopes for a VOIP in MWO.

I look at it the same way that I looked at Planetside 2: yes, there will be some absolute "winners" who go into a game and just go "YA YA YA YA YA YA YA" until they get muted. Yes, there will be some prepubescent, uncracked voices calling people names until they get muted. There will also be people (betting most of us) who use them to call out useful info to the team, like "Kilo CT cored", and having even a few PUG players who are doing that, or calling out flanks, could change the way matches pan out.

PS2 was the same way...you felt a surge of triumph every time Local VOIP would go off and you would hear "GRENADE" shouted. Plus it gave us "DJ Squirrelz", who was the most amazing mother fucker you have ever met in any game, ever. All he would do is buy an ATV, and ride around the game playing music from his local Mexican station over the local VOIP...so you'd be fighting, and it would just fade in slowly...then he would drive past and it would fade away. No one would ever shoot him, and he never shot anyone, so he was considered the single best part of that game on our server.

    Anyways, I digress. ;)

ugh. public voip. it's hilarious to think people are just going to be magically helpful and everyone will be a comp player upon it's implementation. Mute button or not. I'm sure there will be an option just like 3rd person to never have it on so I guess I'm okay with it...

    [Speculation only]

I think it'll be more muted then used in the solo que, in the group it'll be the reverse.

The best way to do it, IMHO, would be three channels.
Internal lance (no general teamwide chat)
    Lanceleaders internal with CO
    Dead channel

This would encourage players to work together and take the lanceleader position as it would mean something. It would also cut down on spam, 3 voices in your lance plus 2 other leaders (one who could be CO) sounds about right for a ten minute long game.

Better then twelve random voices all thrown together. Even on a disciplined clan TS channel, 12 players can get confusing and messy.

The dead channel can be teamwide though, might help with game enjoyment while dead? For example share in the nailbiting end minutes, build discussions, tactics chat, general bonding.

Some nice ideas there Lan-we can only speculate what PGI are planning because as I understand it...it may be only a month away and we still have no concrete info on how it's gonna work!
IF it does get used solo players are in for a big, nasty shock. Stuff they get away with now they won't be able to do anymore. It'll turn into group queue lite. I wonder if there will be complaints about that?

    SAY NO TO VOIP!
Reason is that the crap server of MWO is already slowing down in heavy use. Having VOIP mounted would only increase the problem

    That aside:
It would be better to just have a channel per side, and then a dead channel.
    Simple, easy.

In team then things are easier.
And in PUGS, the fuck would I want to listen to some 12 year old pieces of shit yelling in game (I know it is sad that I have mistaken females for 12 year old pieces of shit before, but still).

Forget that different lances would work like 3 seperate groups coordinately. IT WILL NOT. This will just be a big 12 vs 12, so keeping the side coordinated is already great, if possable at all.

Sounds like something a 12 year old would say :p

Joking aside, I'm torn on this. When I play games I generally cannot isolate myself from the rest of the house hold. Having to have headphones on, talking to others would pretty much do that. If I make time for CW or Unit drops then fine, but if I'm pugging I think I will stear clear of it. Which almost defeats the point of it really..

Teehee. Well, my dislike of VOIP comes from many other games. I don't mind n00bs asking questions and making mistakes, In fact I encourage those and try to answer best i can, but people bitching about everything is a bit turn off, and that is on top of kids talking crap.

So basically I end up always try to mute these functions, despite knowing that it might be helpful. The habits continue so I don't even TS for the most part.

I do understand that mwo players seem a tiny bit more mature on average I guess, but what I gethered from the in-game chat would say otherwise...

@enileph, I have also seen a lot of VOIP being abused and there will no doubt be some in MWO too. On the flip side, I have also seen VOIP being used amazingly well (BF2 PR) so I'd rather give it the benefit of a doubt.

As for you wanting one channel for entire team, it's a bad idea. 12 randoms trying to cooperate for 10 minutes, sorting out who is who, talking over eachother...bad radio discipline grown worse in larger numbers. Hence my suggestion to limit it to lance only. That also gives the trolls less effect, makes it more personal, harder to hide, easier for more shy ppl to speak up, etc.

I have been using TS or VOIP solutions since they became available almost, it's not easy to enforce radio discipline but I would like the tools to do so and give this game a chance. Hell, how about if we mute a player in a game and he's muted two more times in other games, he looses his VOIP rights for a time period? There may be a lot of solutions out there, we'll see what it enda up becoming but likely, yes, I too will mute more often then not unless we somehow can foster the idea of using it well.

I'm am very, very,... very wary of VOIP in online games. People willing to talk and communicate in an online game know how to use TS. In my experience VOIP is just used by picked-upon youngsters proclaiming to whomever is on there on how their l33t skilz p0wn the other team and flame every n00b not doing whatever their l33t brainz believe is the way to victory into oblivion.

    ...

And that is when the match is going well.

Yes sorry, I'm probably getting old, but that is my experience.

I say for all 12 because it would be easier to announce positions of enemies, and things like "all go alone B line" and the like.
Really, those are the commands everyone understand. And everyone should know.
Especially true when it comes to scouting and discovering enemy. Those thing should go to everyone.

Much easier than trying to get that fuckhead team leader to relay thing. And no, usually the proclaimed leader may not be the best guy, and like hell would I listen to a fucking kiddo telling me what to do. A command structure just would not work.

It is a more simple solution. To keep the functionality of the whole thing useful. Also set it to "push to talk" so there will be less channel blasting, probably limit length of each push so things come in short phases. I don't believe in the fucking "no swear" shit, but you don't have to let others hearing you yell all the time. Press when you have something importnt to say, and say it quick and simple.

But alas, that is ok only if it does not hinder the game performance. Right now anything added is going to increase slowdown on the server side during busy hours.

So, now that we have it it'll be interesting to see what people will use it for.

In the first day, I had eight drops total. Three or four had useful VOIP coms, one had a complete failure where a 7 man decided to be complete apes and just spam nonsense, In the remaining three games VOIP was not used.

Made a quick feature suggestion for a mute all button for these occasional games when they all decide to be asshats. This is important to get ASAP to avoid players just deactivating VOIP and never come back, it also robs ppl of the "startup spam". Ignored trolls stop trying.

    http://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/190022-quickfix-add-mute-all/page__pid__4206550#entry4206550

    Hey,

The VOIP addition is very nice and have been useful in quite a few games last night but unfortunately in a cpl of games we had complete jerks that abused it a lot.

This behaviour will make a lot of players simply disable the VOIP rather then suffer such fools, taking time out to individually mute everyone costs you in mid fight. This is why it's important to do this ASAP before the players walkaway from the feature.

But if we add a Mute All button in the Tab screen we enable occasional massmutes without people killing the feature.

Thx for your time reading my suggestion.

Now bear in mind I was rabidly anti-voip on the main MWO forums but so far I've been pleasantly surprised.

People actually trying to coordinate and plan ... scary...

Not had a person who sounded under 30 speak of course so far which might be the difference.

So far the biggest problem has been having to concentrate to understand accents I'm not used to.

First drop I turned it off. I don't want to suffer fools so I only go into TS with people I like.
