In one of the atlas Build discussion threads a heated discussion has been going on about Artemis and weather it is worth the extra Tonnage/Slots/Upkeep cost. So I decided to ask the whole community what they thought. I say yes, from first hand experience Artemis has improved a couple of my builds plenty to make up for its pitfalls. My experience is with SRM6 of course because I don't tend to use LRMs at all. The tighter grouping means less missiles lost around the enemy mech and more damage on the intended part of said mech. That is my experience, what is yours?
I look at things in terms of a match; not a single volley. In terms of a match Artemis would allow me to deliver my payload at greater accuracy than without. Your performance over the match is what determines your worth to your compatriots, not how well you do in a single volley. Of course this depends on your role in that match but you get the idea.
I for one find it to be very useful. I play, at least right now, a brawling Atlas. Therefor my fights are usually with in the SRM range, and most often very close. The Artemis helps tighten the spread so much I've seen a noticeable increase in how quickly I bring down other mechs. I even consider it a weapon that can be used to take head shots with, usually as a finisher on a mech that is already on internals on the head.
I have found it quite good although my experience is limited to SRM6's. Since adding it I have actually been getting a few headshots with my SRM6's. I do find the tighter grouping invaluable for shotgunning lights.
I personally cannot justify it on some builds using SRM6's, specifically ones using three SRM6's. In my eyes, that is 3 wasted tons for a silly effect that I can remedy by closing the distance. Tonnage is valuable to me. It is what allows me to bring extra ammo, dissipate more heat, add more DPS, et cetera. As someone who primarily pilots Atlases it is typically my job to go toe-to-toe with the other Assaults while my team works on them. Knowing my role also means I know whether or not a piece of technology will be useful or not, and Artemis simply is not. I will be playing with it more this weekend to try and see (for the second time) what exactly all the fuss is about. As for LRM's... the usefulness of Artemis is undisputed in my opinion.
I'm generally with Cutsman. If I drop Artemis and put in a bigger engine, I can close the distance faster which makes up for the lack of accuracy. And faster engines lead to more maneuverability as well, which is always good. To each his own.
Call me crude, but I've found that simply putting more damage on target as quickly as possible and killing people increases my survivability and effectiveness greatly. It's hard to sneak up on someone with an Atlas, so I may as well try and hit them as I'm closing in especially if they've got something big I need to disable. That's another reason why I like the higher DPS from my LLs as opposed to just carrying more SRM ammo, knocking out somebody's BFG early makes a world of difference, especially with the recent prevalence of trial K's (colocated XL engine and Gauss rifle, yum yum!)
Why do you think I mentioned how I always target the side torso for the easy kill? I can actually hit it from a longer range after I come around a corner with Artemis SRMs before it plinks me with its Gauss a few times.
So artemis users what ranges are you using your SRMs? I tend to use mine at like 30-40m or less it seems
I use it at about twice that range, 60-80. In a pinch you can use it out to about 150 to plaster scouts and such, just look at the example in the video I posted above.
You would know about putting more DPS on target. I saw that 2 X Gauss, 2 X ER PPC Catapult you were running.
Lumbers like an Atlas, overheats after 3 alphas, only 3 tons of Gauss ammo and cardboard armor but hooooly hell does it put damage on target! I gotta post that up here sometime soon. The world must know.
You killed my buddy in his Gausscat right at the start of the match. I was laughing and trying to figure out how the hell you mounted it all. I was about a grid away from you when you killed him with someone in front of me. To say that was the fastest I ever saw a Cata die to a Light and Medium is an understatement.
You have no idea how much that just made my day. I'm glad the folks on the receiving end find it as hilarious as I do! It's probably a good thing I didn't run into you later in the night, at one point we were running a four man premade with nothing but glass cannon glassapults and calling our shots together, most fun I've ever had on Caustic, watching Atlases go from full to fully cored in under 3 seconds...
