I don't know if Assaults are easy mode. I do know that you don't play Mediums unless you like to get picked on at the playground or you like to have the muscle dude kick sand in your face at the beach.
I don't like getting sand in my face or being picked on but I love my centurion! Working on gaining elites on it.
Haha, my Kintaro is atlas bane. When there is a bully, all you have to do is be smarter than him and use cheap tactics and tricks to ensure your victory! Before running into the next one -_-
I am loving the *shit* out of my Cents. I wish I had gone that direction with my first mediums instead of the Blackjack.
If you know what you're doing pretty much any mech or class can be easy mode. I found out very quickly that Atlases and Awesomes are very killable. But once I learned what I needed to do then yeah it got easy. But I personally think mediums and lights are easy mode because of the maneuverability. I used to think Jenners were hard to play, spent a few matches in one and I can see why people use them so much. That's total easy mode right there. Cents can take such a pounding for the weight and still dish out a lot of damage. That's pretty easy too.
There's an impression that since Assaults are slow enough to stay back from trouble and heavily armored enough to soak a fair share of trouble, that they are objectively easier to pilot but that assertion didn't pan out. We've found that each pilot finds using one class of 'mech easy and facing one class of 'mech hard.
To me... not really. First of, I'm a medium and heavy pilot so I have little experience with piloting a giant hulk mech. I have many times but because they are cumbersome and the fact that they are huge, it's difficult to play IMO. I guess I like having mobility and taking opportunities to shoot enemies. I'm probably the worse assault pilot out there hear:
I agree with Archwright, and that everyone has a different idea of what is easy mode. i took the traditional route and started with lights (Commandos, Ravens), moved to Mediums (Hunchbacks), then Heavies (Catapult and Cataphract), and now am working on assaults (Atlas and now Battlemasters). I am frankly terrible in lights, and pretty poor in hunchbacks. In the hunchbacks, a good game for me would be 400 damage and 1 or 2 kills. When I jumped into a Catapult K2, 400 damage games became the norm, and the same held true for the Cataphracts (oh yeah, I am also supremely terrible as an LRM boat so the less said about the CPLT-A1 and C1 the better). Now I'm trying out Assaults, and I'm back to being mediocre. I agree that something like an Atlas will last longer in a straight-up firefight than anything else, so doing decent damage is easier than in other mechs, but excelling in an assault is not a given for every pilot. So based on my experience, I would consider heavies to be easy mode, but that is just because I've found something that caters to the playstyle I prefer to play.
Yes, playstyle matters alot. I am doing ok in mostly Mediums and Heavies, but you can feel that certain variants/styles of mech would suit you better after a while. Oh, as for you, you should go for a Victor on assault, maybe that would suit you more. BOTH pilots and builds. I don't care who you are, but you are not going to do much if you are in an Atlas with nothing but two SLas, and a NARC with 20 tons of ammo all over the body.
That would be hilarious if they ever introduced Chargers and had the CGR-1A1 as a trial mech (80 tons, 5x SLas, STD 400 Engine).
Anyone can build a decent mech, but eventually it comes down to piloting. Someone in an atlas with two SLas and a great pilot is just as useless as a horrible pilot in a 5 star build.
Well, I'll say this, a bad player in an assault is a much bigger liability than if they took up a medium slot.
I might as well say, it depends on the type of assault mech and your skill and play style. Some people feel more at home piloting an Atlas while lumbering down a flank. Others may have adapted the mobility and hit-hard then back off play style like mediums. Easy mode? I guess it depends on which one because I have trouble playing Atlases. Because I'm mainly a medium pilot, a Victor might be more suitable for me.
I see the comment that a bad player playing an Assault is a bigger liability to a team all the time. Personally I can not see that being the case as the game presently stands. Since there is no weight matching, battle value, or anything being used by the matchmaker besides ELO ranking it doesn't matter whether you're in a Locust or a Atlas. This is in pugs of course, teams should have who pilots what worked out before they drop. If/when CW comes out, a change to the matchmaker, or other battle modes besides team death match are in the game this could change. Right now I'd say if a bad pilot can survive a bit longer and dish a bit more damage in an Assault they're actually helping their team by going big.
