Not sure about the rest but, NGNG is probably not the best place to get fair opinions from. Then again NGNG are just little lapdogs now. I am against paid-for (partially or not) player groups as a whole. This would totally give a slanted view of how the game is doing.
I understand the whole disappointment and the anger with the game and it`s content. If you compare it to the promises PGI made since the beginning, you have a reason to speak very bad about them. From the Founder`s Perspective it is a betrayal of the first Financiers by not keeping the time schedule and implementing the right stuff etc. All right, they had severaly yrs for development, no Excuses. You can`t let your Founders wait more than 5 yrs to deliver the required content. Now if you compare it to other great Casual Arcade Online Games like Hawken, WOT/WOW, Warthunder, Star Conflict, LOL, etc.. then MWO is not bad. It's still a fun F2P and you have all the tons of options to config your Mech, engineering/testing interesting builds etc. In other similar games you don`t have this depth of configuration - there you just buy your vehicle and maybe switch between explosive and armor-piercing bullets, that`s all. This is unique in MWO in my opinion. The next step to get this game on a higher level of gameplay is implementing real MMO content (CW, League Ladders, Tournamentships, Lobbies with Matchcreator - e.g. Kuritas Pilots should fight together with Kuritas against Davions, etc.). I think PGI is still very interested to succeed in this mission, but they need much more professional Dev people to hasten to bring fast & correct Bugfixes/Updates. And they need to have some really professional Players around them to make excellent decisions for Balancing. MW:Online lives and dies by Community Warfare. Clan vs Clan vs Inner Sphere etc etc. At the moment it is just a Casual Mech Simulator with no End Game content and many balancing problems (nerfing and buffing in the wrong direction). It is strange, and somehow really feels like the Devs are just experimenting like Amateurs, not making the right choices. Take e.g. Coolant Flush, in my opinion a wrong decision to implement into the game. That makes hot mechs can run Amok like hell, no real consequences. WTF? For me, if you produce too much heat, your Mech should explode, either lose something, or just make a big Kaboooom. End of the Line. Another thing - the Implementation of PPCs and Jumpjets, Artillery etc.. somehow destroys the fun that i had in the predecessors - namely: Brawling with Mechs at Mid-Close Range and fight until all your Armor is gone and then die in Honor. 20 yrs ago i never saw Poptarding Mechs, could never imagine in my wildest Mechporn Dream. Now we see so many of them on the battlefield. It's ridiculous. It was simply find your enemies, fire some missiles and then if they aren't clever enough to take cover and so still alive, go find & destroy them in an agressive Brawl. Atm if you have bad luck and are put against enemies full of Poptards, Missile Boats and Artillery Strikes, that really is no fun for me. That's why i suggested some RPG elements into the game, making a limit of every role in a match, so that teams are more balanced. But seems technically not possible atm because of too small player base? idk.. Some options in the game suck like hell, but i can tolerate them, because for me it is a great satisfaction to kill all those Poptards, Missile Boats and Artillery Strike Users (usually annoying Lights). Competition feeling is like Zero, Casual Fun is great (by some limitations). So the game still does attract a lot of Casual Gamers i think (i see everyday new Recruiters of new "Clans"), but sadly disappoints all the professional Gamers, who really would invest a lot of more Time and Money to live their Mechporn Dreams in this Game. Lets loose ourself and wait for CW, Ranting doesn`t really help anything, just Patience.
On one hand I'm a founder and yeah I do kinda feel ripped off my money at times and I have been openly disappointed for many PGI decisions: - Premature launches of the game and patches - Poor beta testing/balancing, including UI 2.0 - Bad management of deadlines - Insufficient cooperation with the community and soon to come: - 3/3/3/3 instead of an actual tonnage limit (now you'll just see the max tonnage in each weight class, and 4-jager parties are gimped) - sustained fire nerf (another example of bad balancing) On the other hand, I am still enjoying the game itself a lot. The basic mechanics are allright as you can target different sections, equip your own preferred weapons, and have a hell of a lot of fun in 4-mans. And two of the four main issues I addressed are also dependent on the cesspool of a community on their main forums. The others are from understaffing and inexperience. We ought to give them some time to learn to make a big project like this with avid fans of the lore and it's uniqueness in the market. You'd think 2 years since closed beta should be enough but the lack of useful input by players must be severely limiting their learning curve. If everyone is simply going to be angry at anything they do, that won't help them a single bit. People that abused certain things that get patched get angry, people that don't abuse these get angry when they're not fixed, and amidst this chaos all good ideas simply get swallowed by 99% of hate. They'd have to look in somewhat more civilized places. And they have, that's probably why they seem to be so close to NGNG at the moment (and yet another reason people are getting frustrated) as I believe that is the only place 'they know to get useful information'. If NGNG had more professional players and a more critical input on the current state of the game (not angry, just a better understanding of what would be beneficial) their influence wouldn't be as bad as we claim it to be right now. If they'd branch out their community managing (probably shouldn't have fired Garth there, PGI) to friendlier and more professional outside sources like this site or maybe a few clans in the game, they'd get a much better understanding. Niko Snow popping up here (though the posts he made weren't of any particular value) is a tiny step in the right direction. However, he shouldn't be starting the 'omg look at this awesome stuff we made okbye' type of conversation, rather asking our opinions on game-related things. Hopefully this game thrives, as I'd like to get more enjoyment out of it. Also I hope I don't sound too much like a white knight, but we have to cut PGI some slack from all the hate that has been sent their way imo and discuss the game on a reasonable tone.
For once I agree with you. The Niko Snow thing is just a one-off hello at best, I don't think our opinions get noticed. I generally put PGI in the somewhat acceptable category when it comes to f2p online game people, not the best, but better than LOADS of shit there is out there, even populat ones, as most of them are big time p2w. Yes, I am on the asian side thus have seen lots of f2p stuff. Some of them are quite intesresting really, with great gameplay even. But without paying you are stuck with crap chances to get anything nice, and shit like daily game limit and what not. PGI is still giving an acceptable stuff relatively. Yes it is no LOL but it is quite playable. At least we are here talking and playing it, right? I do understand the frustration of any founders, as their progress is much much slower than they should have, being late by years is not more. I guess I am happy I did not jump into the founders bus. Then again I nexer expact to do any roleplaying stuff like those Clan-heads out there, I am mostly treating this as a mech simulation with happy customization (should know me by now that I customize and smurfy alot and alot). I think it is still fun to play, and I do play a couple games everyday. Well, there is some progress. It is slower than expacted, but at least it exist. I am not about to throw in huge cash cause of that, but I did use up some MC from time to time (mostly mechbay), if anything I spend thousands of MC this month (granted it is for mechbay sale)
I think you missed the point here. His arrival on itself is okay; they're noticing a (I might say) pretty professional site with quite extensive knowledge about the game (or you can't min/max). The way he arrived (basically orgasming over their own content) is absolutely terrible. Mostly has to do with inexperience and trying to get friendly with us. If instead of trying to be friendly, they'd try to be PROFESSIONAL, it would be much better than a tiny step in the right direction. That is basically what I meant. If Niko Snow got here and posted in a discussion about the AC2 nerf for example about why they were doing that and asking for input (though we've already posted that of our own) I'd bet you wouldn't be complaining.
Exactly! Instead of being professional a "hello and goodbye" is pulled. Could have at least issue some explanation or recent goings of the game, even if it is a repost of things from some official channel. This would at least show that our opinions are woth something. It is not hard to see that people on this site are not just a pile of gungho kids but people who would spend time to analyse and discuss on the happenings of the game development. A simple "How do you guys think about the recent patches?" would have meant a lot more.
I think it's interesting that his first post was a drop of propoganda, and then throwing up a rainbow over the MadCat discussion.
Like promotes like. Let's just all remember that our hate just induces more hate, and that we are sometimes irrational beings, as are PGI, and that we have fallacies too. We must be humble in our assertions, but ready to protect them with our lives. Not saying any of you are wrong, just that the key component that makes humans what they are, is that sometimes we are just illogical, and have so many fallacies it isn't even funny.
My philosophy in life is that I try to be the mediator, otherwise rage and anger go largely unchecked. It also helps that my personality makes it so I am not a huge hot head a lot of the time, granted I am full of fallacies as well. hear:
Amusingly missed this thread being moved and just presumed Michael killed it. The Gold mech wasn't a response to anything said here it was actually purchased rather earlier (though greatly influenced by reading the histrionics on the main MWO forums). For anyone paying attention I'm at the stage of my life where I can afford to spend on myself. Worked for over 25 years.... check. Paid off my mortgage... check. Children grown up.... check. Divorced the ex... check. I can name quite a few people with gold mechs currently in similar positions but the general commonality is we're older and tend to spend a lot of time playing PC games rather than chasing the latest FPS shooter. The F2P model isn't some charity to give people a free game its a business model. Its predicated on the idea that some people will pay far more to counterbalance those that pay nothing. The point literally was.... influencing the people paying nothing gains you nothing. Influencing those of us that are in that top market segment is your goal. The simple warning is that I know quite a few people who bought gold mechs that did it because plain whining is ... well whining. It just makes you sound irritating and not someone we'd want to socialise with or listen to. Ergo we react to that perception of you. I actually don't like the F2P model at all as I far prefer subs. Not only is it a lot cheaper for me it also reasonably guarantees that players there are commited to being there and in my experience the community tends to be far more invested in cooperating and helping new players. Of course thats a totally different discussion.
Way too big of a presumption on your part to assume that type of stuff as fact; it's not... it's anecdotal... Well, now that a few NGNG guys have PGI tags and are "PR, community leaders, and advisers" directly for PGI. I thought this gem needed a revival. hear:
