Just purchased an SSD for a new upgrade for my machine and am debating on which OS to put on it.

My home machine runs Win 7 Pro (64 bit) right now with the 780 Ti and the i7 2600K + 16gb ram.

Lots of people at work love Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell and I actually have this running on my office laptop. Classic Shell makes shit easy peasy to navigate so all the "metro UI sucks, blah blah blah" folks can save the aesthetic argument.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

8.1 all the way. It's way more stable to run multiple things at once.

I use 8.1 at work and have already updated my personal laptop from 7. I have been procrastinating to do the desktop though, but its on the to-do list. There is a bit of a culture shock at first, but after you learn the various shortcuts and the behaviour of the UI, it is fantastic. The start screen is a bit annoying, but not nearly as offensive as you might think. It does force a full-screen redraw (particularly bad when you remote desktop), but for keyboard-first users its faster because the search is much optimized in comparison.

Yeah I bought 8.1 64 bit today when I picked up the SSD from NCIX.

Everything is installed and working. I just need to do some tweaks when I get home from the office and then begin installing video drivers, software, games, blah blah blah.

Next upgrade? i7 3770k or a 30+ inch monitor. Not sure which yet.

I would think the monitor first, since it's harder to set up. But either one is expensive.

I assume your graphics card is up to snuff depending on the monitor's native resolution to make that even a worthwhile purchase.

Are you going to be doing heavy overclocking? If not then a K-type processor is a waste of your moola. What CPU are you currently running?

I disagree. The K model are the most stable due to the fact that many have reported that they can easily overclock the processor. That alone is enough to purchase one.

They can easily overclock the processor because the K-type processors feature an unlocked core multiplier which allows for higher clocks. If you're running stock clocks or only slightly tweaking then it's not really worth the extra $100+ dollars (AUD).
    I guess it's personal preference.
