From what I've gathered over time, the graphics were nerfed down so that the game could run on as many systems as possible without it murdering framerates.
The missile effects on the older video are amazing. Much better than the blobbed glowing lights that fly in a straight line.
Sad til it's your machine choking and stuttering. They make the compromise so that more people will play the game. The graphics as they are now aren't terrible. Even if they aren't what they used to be.
my machine is still stuttering with the current setup which isn't too shabby. CryEngine, you so silly if it compiles, ship it Reminds me of StarCitizen when they had to re-program the whole Engine for multithread 64-bit support
I mentioned that earlier here: https://www.mechspecs.com/threads/mwo-display-settings-and-you-your-configuration-settings.5352/
When your player-base dwindles because of expensive prices and slow advancement you have to compromise and open the game up to as many people as possible. That usually means an over optimization of the engine/graphics.
That's interesting as I much prefer the current sounds and the way they differ on some of the battlefields. Same with the modern lighting is much better. Hoping when they do a pass on the old maps they update that.
PGI is having to work with what they have. And they don't have alot. They have a crew of almost 50, and with the way Canada is, it's expensive to do things there. They keep most of the stuff in house, and compromises have been made. While I'm glad the game is in it's current state, much more was promised, and more is coming. Next year is going to make or break this game, seeing as they are without a Publisher, and now must work with other companies to make their own Marketing outside of the Sales. It's a New Hope, but we've been thru some dark times. And I hope they are behind many of us; Garth and Niko; God rest their souls.
Some posts have been moved, as the topic has shifted from Graphics to Gameplay. Move along, and continue your discussion.
On the graphics discussion, I've noticed mechs and their details have degraded slightly from the original beta to today. now I'm talking about texture quality on the mech. here is a dragon on the original Forest Colony. Notice the brighter lighting, and the details of the cockpit. I'll get a friend to get a screenshot on very high quality to compare my dragon 5N to this image. Hopefully on River City, or even Forest Colony.
That said the visible damage modelling is vastly better than closed beta. Beta you were just using sculpted setups.
Yeah they did improve the damage states of the game over the last two years however I agree that the texture work on mechs seems to have been toned down. I think Grimm said it up above somewhere that they have had to reduce the graphic fidelity to open up the game to a larger audience as they don't have as many players as they once did and have probably priced many people out of the game entirely; people get tired of spend spend spend and not seeing anything in return. Hopefully with community warfare on the horizon, yes even I am optimistic, we will see some old players come back. Shit even Soy has come back to posting on Mech Specs who knows what can happen!
So glad the collisions are still out of the game. With the amount of trolls in multiplayer gaming these days it would make the experience even worse. I'd agree with the sentiments that they toned down the visuals to reach a broader audience, afterall, we see that with all the goddamn console ports these days (save for AC Unity---that thing is a beast to run.) But to me that's more of a problem of having the low settings actually be low and the max settings really tax a system. You can actually have your cake and eat it in this scenario. Doubt they'll ever bother with a visual upgrade though. And man do the sound effects need an overhaul.
Its really not to bad compared to the old closed beta image. I agree, the damage textures are really good, but only when they are accurate. The hitboxes sometimes mess up the damage, but it's not that noticeable when moving in a fight.
