Enjoy the Poll! Let the Battle of the Mech Games begin. Here are some interesting Youtube-Clips for some of the older games, just if you don`t know them or never played them for whatever reason (FYI I played them all in the last centuries! hoarhoarhoar):
Loved Shogo - Still running on my comp Thought that Heavy Gear 2 was a lot like Shogo Loved the MW2 series MW4 Mercs with MekTek mech packs - Still running on my comp MWLL - Still running on my comp MC 1-2 Omnitech - Still running StarSiege... loved the fact that you could see what weapons were actually on the mech. Played the whole Metaltech series including BattleDrome
You don't have Mechwarrior (the original there). SHOGO was a great game. Refuse to acknowledge MW4, i always thought it was a step back from MW3 which had targeting computers and being able to target specific parts, better sounds and a destructible environment etc.
in technical terms, MW3 was better than MW4 as long as you don't account for the balance trainwreck it is.
That's why I mentioned the mektek mods. Probably the most complete collection of mechs in game of any title once they finished with it. MW3 was good just because of the engine. I also liked how it handled lancemate control. A step above by any reconing.
Yeah, i thought i have listed enough of MechWarrior Series Games.. so i dropped the first one because i don`t believe that many would chose that one. You can select the last option and name it explicitely in your post, if you want that Game in the Hall of Fames. But there IS a Mech game, which i played BEFORE MechWarrior 2 and had hilarious fun with it. Should deserve a place in the List, but well.. The Intro is so reminding of Terminator Intro. Epic!!! other nice ones:
I agree on the collection of Mechs, that is something, but the underlying engine was sub par and that could not be fixed. The AI wasn't too shabby either in MW3 (like you said, Lance mate control etc). In any case, i'm just harping at my old disappointment of what the initial release of MW4 was, it did get better after a few patches and expansions.
Armored Core 5? Hell no, unless we're talking about the CG intro, which is absolutely phenomenal. The original Armored Core games up to Silent Line/Nexus were worthy of praise, to varying degrees, of course, but were a lot of fun to mess around with. Anything after is complete shit, though. Front Mission 3 (not 4, ew!) gets my vote, followed by the AC series-ish and Mechcommander.
In no particular order: MC2 MWO MC:Gold Armored Core 2 (PS1) Armored Core 1 (PS1) Virtual On (arcade & Sega Saturn) Front Mission series (particularly SNES/PS1) Virtual On was sweet in the arcade, had the full cockpit seating and everything and was VS mode. I did a quick youtube search for it - this video shows a different cabinet model and it's not a full-seater, but you'll get the idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPba2WdYZJs
Agreed, AC4 was about the best control wise, but AC5 was just terrible. I've played Titanfall, Hawken, AC4, AC5, Chromehounds, Gundam, Gun Metal, MWLL, MWO, and MW 4M. Heavy gear was only a test run at a friends house, but it was still fun. AND, they are making a new game for that series as well! So far, the worst games were Gun Metal, Chromehounds, and AC5. Still, they all had an interesting story line in those 3. The best combat and mechanics were HG and AC4, followed by MWLL, MWO, Titanfall, and Hawken. Still, Titanfall is spades above all else at this point. You can pick 1 of 3 different voices now for your Titan AI, Betty, Lisa, and Jeeves. This feature was just released, but it is a great piece of detail I love about Titanfall. Still, I'd say my favorite game of all time would be AC4. But Titanfall is the newest, and the most shiny, so it's taking a lot of my time right now.
I actually had my original post earlier mention Virtual On at length but I closed the window by accident and didn't want to type it all again, lol. I always made it a point to play Virtual On when I went to any arcade that had it. I did miss the bit about Iron Soldier on the Jaguar, too; I remember wanting to play that game when I saw an advertisement in Game Players magazine (remember that shit?) Oh, and AC2 was on PS2 Off topic, but what the hell: Anyone remember PTO, Pacific Theater of Operations? That game was AWESOME
Yeah, I agree VirtualOn should have been on this list (not including the "Other" slot). I'm also surprised to see Titanfall holding its own. It gets a LOT of bad mouthing, but I love it.
Wow you lot don't half vote for games for sentimentality reasons - some of those games you're picking look absolutely awful.......... should have titled the thread "whats you're favourite mech game" as thats actually what people are answering on. Makes me so grateful we've gone past that era of 386's, 486's and early consoles.
MW4 Mercs and MC2 are great fun. Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun had some cool mechs too, like the Titan and Wolverine. I also enjoyed playing Robot Warlords on the PS2. It was a terrible game, with a crap storyline, ridiculous cut-scenes and very limited multi-player gameplay, but I enjoyed the mech customisation. I think it was one of the first games available for the PS2, which sort of explains why it is so naff. You can probably pick it up for peanuts now and though it isn't a very good game, I can recommend it purely as something a bit different. A throwaway purchase, but you may be surprised. It's other release name is Velvet File.
Idk why Chromehounds is getting flak. Before the servers were shutdown the persistent world multiplayer was quite cool. I also liked the ability to put parts virtually anywhere on your mech. I've even been tempted to buy MAV on steam. Its a Chromehounds clone made because of the disappointment fans had about the servers getting shutdown. http://store.steampowered.com/app/280440/ ------> Steam link to M.A.V for those interested
