I would go with Ilya Maulermets, er Mauler. To me it is one of the best Assaults out there. Great hard points and only IS mech that can boat 4x lbx-10's.
Atlas for brawling/tanking and Direwolf for jump capable dakka. Of the others I see a lot of Maulers as they're newer and frequent King Crabs.
First assault mech? Mauler, Battlemaster or Stalker. DWFs are very potent firepower-wise, but slow as hell and moving the wrong way often spells doom and can be very frustrating to play in PUG world. Same with the AS7s, allthough especially the builds made for brawling usually mount something like a STD 340 - 350. In comparison to the DWFs they are very tanky, but pale a bit considering their firepower. Banshees are comparable to AS7s as tanks and especially 3M and 3E are great hardpoint wise, but the BNCs are very huge targets and usually pretty slow as well, thus playing them can be very unforgiving. Maulers, and especially both the 1P and the MX90 are very brutal when boating IS ACs, usually 2s, 5s and UAC5s or some sort of mixture and can tank a lot of damage with their huge shield arms. In boating dakka they are comparable to the KGCs, but surpass those when it comes to absorbing incoming damage. Battlemasters mirror those tanking capabilities nicely as their arms are great for shielding as well, but are best when mounting an assortment of lasers and sometimes missiles. 2C, 1G, and 1S are highly recomended here. Finally, Stalkers probably are still among the most used assault mechs in CW / faction play for a reason. They tend to die quickly when caught from either side, but this risk is compensated by those excellent high mounted energy hardpoints. The Misery also is an excellent hero mech even until today. I'd go for 4N, Misery and 5M here or either 3H or 5S when not spending any MC / real money. Both the Highlander and the Victor still seem to suffer from the result of PGI massively swinging the nerf hammer against the poptart meta of the old days. Additionally they lack the mobility and agility needed when mounting such a low amount of hardpoints which are also mounted pretty low. Awesomes sadly are for fun only, a barn door wide hitboxes simply can't be compensated with reasonable quirks. As of the other clan assault mechs, all of them are a bit special. Both the Gargoyle and the Executioner are meant to be pretty fast, but lack firepower when not boating a substantial amount of small or medium lasers. Warhawks are very nice but still special as well: hardpoints are low and limited and similar to the Stalkers getting caught from the side is pretty unhealthy.
What playstyle are you after? PUG? Group? 12-man? Best allround choice imo is the Warhawk. Fast, well armed and decently armored. It plays like a slow heavy and will not give you the frustration the Direwolf, Atlas and King Crab will in PUG-world.
Possibly once its resized as its having the largest size decrease but those hitboxes/ weapon locations are fairly bad too. Shoot one side torso and you can destroy most of its weaponry.
Mauler and banshee are the two best assaults in game. Mauler is a phenomenal ballistics platform. Banshee is faster than most and can bring similarly awesome ballistic loadouts but also laser vomit loadouts. Atlas is only good because of its excessive structure quirks. Stalkers are great, but not as good as banshees. King crab is basically a worse mauler. Battlemaster can fill almost same role as banshee, its just lighter so less armor but faster. Other assaults aren't honestly worth mentioning. Clans are too expensive and just not as good.
@POOTYTANGOSAUR Oh how tastes differ,... The only Mauler I like is the 6LL version. I despise the Banshees for being lumbering enemy fire magnets, just like King Crabs and Atlai. I find Battlemasters nigh useless, similar to Zeus' but tend to enjoy playing the Stalker. Overall, clan assaults, whilst being very expensive, are many times over better than their IS counterparts
The banshee is one of the most durable mechs in the game. Humanoid hitboxes are good anyway. But with enormous arms and evenly sized CT and STs it is a phenomenal tank. Extremely good at rolling damage and is capable of builds like 5 lgpls while still going at least 68 kph with plenty of heatsinks. It is equally as good with a large standard engine as it is with an XL. Also has freakishly high mounts so can compete with the likes of the stalker for peak snipers. In fact it can run 5 erll at near eye level, with a std 340. So it is faster, better armored, and has comparably high mounts to a stalker. Arguably the worst build for a mauler would be something only taking advantage of the sub par arm mounts. They're low and far apart. I'm not quite sure how you could dislike 4 uac5, 5 ac5, 2 ac20, 2 gauss, 6 ac2, 2 ac2+4ac5, etc. It is thee most versatile ballistic assault. Also with humanoid hitboxes it is more survivable than a king crab or stalker so other than speed there is no downside to a mauler. Also has similarly large arms to the banshee so if you are running a brawler loadout (it is capable of many of the sort) you can torso twist extremely well. I am a lover of the stalker but it is pretty much a 2 trick pony (unless you are one of the lrm people). You can either vomit LL or LPL both of which a banshee can very arguably do better, or you can run an srm+ laser brawler. The 5 srm6, 4 mlas 5m really has no counterpart atm. A mauler could run 2 ac20, 4 srm4 or something similar and field a very similar alpha with a bit more pinpoint. But as far as only srms that is the one role the stalker can fill better than almost any other mech in game. Soon the Archer will crush that role too though (not an assault so it isn't pertinent to the topic at hand, but will pretty much be able to trounce the stalker as far as SRM boating is concerned, and any other mech for that matter lel) Preference is still at hand though. So if you prefer the stalker, have fun. I was just posting the two most viable assault mechs that can fill ALOT of roles very well. As far as the clan vs is debacle. In mwo, right now, innersphere assaults are superior. A direwolf simply cannot out do a mauler. I'm not about to get into thread spam over it. But you'd be hard pressed to find any mech that can beat a 4 uac5 mauler, the dang thing has about 20 sustained DPS. The daishi can field some great sniper builds or high alpha loadouts. But it has alot more weaknesses than a mauler. 1v1 a dire may be able to edge out most wins, but it doesn't face multiple opponents as well and can't swap engines so it is much more limited on loadouts. Not to mention all the brawler builds the mauler can fit that the dire can't even begin to tango with. The warhawk is a similar story vs the banshee, it can't carry as heavy of loadouts and the banshee is more survivable. Even a bmaster is better than a warhawk, but I guess that shouldn't say much because a bmaster is better than ALOT of mechs. The Kodiak may turn the tables quite a bit, but we will see for how long with the proposed heat changes and its hitboxes, how high multiple ballistics end up being, etc. Edit: Fixed multiple post bs. (I'm on mobile)
I've got Warhawks, Banshees and Stalkers of my own, didn't buy any other assaults yet. I like the Banshees because of their arms, but having everything mounted in the torso makes aiming/leading your target a bit tricky. Nevertheless I like it. Warhawks I'm still trying to figure out how to make them work. I've tried multiple builds but they don't feel right to me. Stalkers are bae. I love brawling and they are relatively maneuverable, plus having some of the sickest close-range builds. Next mech I'm planning to buy is the D-DC, because a got an AS7-S for free some time ago and I might as well try to start mastering the chassis.
Maulers for sure. I had banshees, hated them and sold, battlemaster, hated and sold, zeus, meh... But damn do I enjoy my maulers! All of mine are mastered and I always have fun in them
Oh chattahah. You haven't ascended to XL banshees yet? They reveal the true potential of the platform. Now go, be free from the restraints of a std engine life. But seriously, maybe that's why all of the people in this thread have hated on banshees. They truly are a top performing assault, pretty much unmatched in their capabilities. Hell, find another assault that can effectively mount 5+ large pulse. Oh yeah, there isn't one (mauler and boars head can do it but restricted to lower mounts and slower mechs). Also of note is how often the banshee is used in competitive matches or even regular queue by all the top groups. I'd say the banshee is somewhat of an icon of BMMU also hahaha.
/thread If you don't have the Atlas at this point, you're doing it wrong. Mauler and King Crabs next, everything else to preference.
I'm definitely doing something wrong indeed, I suspect it's spending money on classes that I like more such as mediums
Problem is that Atlas are only so-so mech. You basically have the DDC, and maybe the S. Mauler is more stable and variated. KGC is great output, but they are all too similar. I would go for Stalker, though some like battlemaster. Have to say the laser/SRM combo is fun though.
K is still a decent variant. Double AMS is always fun. Also 4 LpLs and an AC/20. They are A Lot Tankier and somehow more maneuverable than a Stalker. Mauler is the *Safe* buy, but you'll feel like a badass when you're behind the Reins of an Atlas.
