I mean, aren't they? Technically? There's really nothing they do anymore than ANY other Light doesn't do better. You might say the relatively strong quirks on certain of the variants allow them to still be viable, but; the quirks aren't even that strong.

Just curious if anyone still runs them, and with what type of build, and to what effect. I used to really enjoy the 5D-variant, but now . . .

I still run the 5K variant occasionally. It's fun but I wouldn't call it effective. I think the only thing it has over other super fast IS light mechs is the JJs. If not for that, it would be completely superseded.

I run by 5K from time to time. It's my fastest MG based IS Mech.

I still have my 5D and never full skilled it out (Because I never fully leveled it pre tech upgrade and don't play it often now).

Yes, they're obsolete. The 5D was the longest hold out, given that for a long time, it's was the only ECM Light with jump jets. Unfortunately, now that the Assassin exists, that niche is gone too, because the ECM Assassin can do everything the 5D can do, and it can do it faster, or with more armor, or more weapons(and it can mount missiles). While patch notes have continued to show minor quirk pass updates for various chassis variants, the Spider has been ignored, and without any quirks that will allow it to compete with said Assassin, there's simply no reason for anyone to bring one to a fight any more, unless maybe you feel like it fits better in your Faction Play deck than the Assassin does(saves 10 tons, potentially).

Edit: I almost forgot, with 1 jump jet, the ECM Assassin actually jumps *better* than the 5D. Jump jets for the two variants are the same weight. Figure that one out.

Edit2: In answer to your question about variants, I'll go find my screenshot later, from back when I first started. I saw a dude in a 5D do over 1000 damage with only 2 Large Lasers. Won the match in a showdown on Assault, at our base(no turrets at the time), vs the 3 remaining enemy 'Mechs. I don't remember for sure, but based on what I know of the SDR-5D loadout capacity, I believe he did not have any ECM. Just speed and skill. I believe the screenshot is the reason my first 'Mech was a 5D.

I feel like all the mechs have different flavors, generally. I try to keep them as different flavors, too, or else it feels like I'm just in another first person shooter, selecting the machine gun or the pulse rifle. As such, my spider 5D is my equivalent to arctic cheetah with two erll. I've made my 5V a sensor spider, with the bap and tc4 and 2erml, I was trying to max sensor range: it's like a reusable uav with lasers; the jumping let's me spot people, sensor tree let's me keep em locked, and I can tell with the minimap doritos where the enemy is better than any other mech I have. Max alpha dps is the two mpl variant, but max range with weight consideration is erml. Maybe I will do it as a 1erll setup, as they have about the same alpha dps as erll. But the sensor role is cute; it's somethin different.

How about that new 80% base cap stat on the 5v, eh? eh? Makes capping a breeze -- especially if you've got 5v friends! Locust speeds, bird-like heights, maximum eye-sight, and no firepower. Yesssss.
