Hi folks! In my last cw matches, I was blamed several times for not using an Adv. Zoom Module on my long range mechs ( TDR-9S - 3ERPPC e.g.) and how suboptimal that would be.
While I really enjoy all the PPC/ERLL/Gauss shenanigans, I just can't stand the time it takes to zoom out and the reduced field of view you get.
The only mech I use it on is my dualgauss Jagermech, because every round counts and there is enough time to zoom while charging the weapon.
I don't run it on my RVN-3L chicken for the same reason I don't use it on my TDR-9S: with a bit practice, placing hits is the same without the module but you can aim faster and twist/hide earlier. Also it's easier to hit moving targets.

Do you use it? If you do, are there loadouts, you would think a zoom module is mandatory?

I only use (or I should say equip it) in CW because I don't have multiple modules, and I put it on my gauss mech.

Other then lagging me I feel my accuracy is actually worse with it, so for me it's just a filler module that I use to scout at 1400+ meters or forget to have on at all.
Either way, I don't like it, and I don't feel the need of it in any build.

About being blamed, until you hit without it, I see no reason why you should have it on.

The only mech I tend to keep my Adv. Zoom on is my Ghost Walker DWF...I also tend to tell people not to use it for anything but laser weapons until their aim is very good, since I know it threw my PPC aim WAY off when I was initially using it. Generally speaking, I still aim better without it (except hitscan lasers), so I don't move it around any more.

I only use it on Gauss Jaegers as I have learned to compensate for the aim issues. I have used it on ERPPC mechs but the travel time and the bright flash kind of throws me off when firing, the Gauss has a extremely easy hit confirmation which is much preferable.

Have used zoom on a scout mech with three mech modules available (those are few and often I have better uses).

zoom is ew. only mech I can even think it's worth it on is a gaussjag or gausskitty. I can't imagine there is any decent player commenting on you not using it

I miss more shots with it due to the warped vision, extra lag, and mismatched HUD.

Adv Zoom is good for Gauss/PPC builds. Other than that it is not worth it.
It does help with Gauss though. Zooming is not too slow either, about the same as other zoom. I assume you place "toggle max zoom" as your zoom button feature.

It's damn near useless. Laggy as hell.

I actually like it. I've not noticed any lag, really. One thing to note is that I use the zoom max/zoom min, so I go instantly in and out of it if needed.
I use it on the aforementioned gauss/ppc mechs, and also on some ERLL mechs. I tend to like to target specific components (legs!) and it helps with that. I also lower my mouse sensitivity when I zoom in with it, which makes aiming much easier. If your mouse can't do this, don't use it.

I don't get any lag with it but the mismatched HUD makes it useless for aiming.

I can use it for scouting but I don't. My Super Chicken has other slot requirements.

I sorta feel like ADV Zoom is the red headed step child of modules.

Not to mention the clans mechs don't really need it if they are sporting targeting computers.

For my part, I use it when I can remember to equip it! Some matches I just plain forget, like this one,

ERPPC Thunderbolt the whole time, and I didn't have an Adv. Zoom. Obviously I didn't need it then, though there were a few moments during that match where I was laughing at (and kicking) myself for not bringing it. (I've since then loaded it onto that T-Bolt and have been running with it since.)

I would never say, though, that it is necessary at all, for any build. Sometimes it is handy, though. As Sai mentioned,
This is one of the primary reasons I ever bother bringing this module: When I'm lining up that shot on that Dire at 1200 meters, sometimes the Zoom module helps to target that specific Side Torso.

But it takes practice. I know alot of people here are saying it actually throws their aim off, and yeah, that's not uncommon. The reason for this is generally due to the increased mouse-sensitivity while in Adv. Zoom mode --- each little movement becomes a big movement; you have to be more precise with your movements than normal.
This is also why people warn against using it with Lasers: if you try to track moving targets with your ERLLasers while in Adv. Zoom mode, you'll have a hard time of it, because of that high mouse-sensitivity.

Anyway, I'd personally say, the decision whether or not to use the Adv. Zoom module is entirely up to the personal preference of the pilot. If you find it helps your shots, bring it; if you find it just throws your aim off, don't bother. It's entirely up to you. :)

PS: Regarding the increased mouse-sensitivity, some people actually have multiple mouse-DPI settings, which they switch between depending on what they're doing or piloting at the time. If you care to try something like that (set up a Hotkey to drop the DPI on our mouse whenever you go into Adv. Zoom mode) you might find the module more worthwhile than otherwise.
Though as most of you know, I hate using Macros/Hotkeys in game. So I don't personally do that. I just know some do. :p ;)

I just drop the DPI manually. I have 4 DPI settings, and can customize them at any values between 100 and 5700. I use 100, 800, 1700, and 2400. I drop to 100 when using advanced zoom, 800 at max normal zoom, 1700 for most normal play, and 2400 for twitchy stuff or normal desktop use. Your ideal settings will vary.

I think the sensitivity issue is the biggest problem with advanced zoom. If you have capable hardware it's an excellent module, if you don't it's utter trash.

Yeah, Sai just exemplified the point I made. It's super easy to switch DPI settings on your PC.

For myself, I use the same DPI at all times in this game. I do occasionally notice Adv. Zoom throwing me off (as I said, usually when using Lasers) but I don't consider it a big enough problem to warrant NOT using the module. The benefits of it are worth more to me (precision shots at range with Gauss and PPCs) than its occasional negative effects.

For lag I should have said it better, it drops my FPS under 30 when I use it, and the hit is big especially when I go from 50-60 to 20 suddenly (worse in CW).

I'd use it with a better PC to aim too, probably it looks much worse then it is to me for this issue (infact I remember I used it when playing on my desktop)

I use it whenever it is applicable to a build. I basically follow this thought process:
Radar Deprivation first and foremost, regardless of build.
Is my primary damage source long-range or short-range? if short -> Seismic. If long -> Adv. Zoom.

    I primarily use it on Gauss+(ER)PPC, Dual Gauss, (ER)PPC boats, (ER)LL boats, and AC5 and/or AC2 boats.

I have most notably been using Adv. Zoom on Shenron, the 2x AC5 DRG-1N. The goal is to limit the damage spread by seeing exactly where your projectiles are hitting, then adjusting your aim. I find it very useful.

I use it on 3 mechs:

    RVN-3L
    Gauss Jaeger
    LPL Stalker

On the latter I only keep it because on one specific drop I provided an overeager Victor an early end of game screen whilst zoomed in 4x. Just for sentimental reasons thus ;-)

I hate advanced zoom I'd rather have target info gathering or advanced sensor range. It's another zoom toggle I usually end up stuck in and panicked when I get backstabbed.

Also, it slows you down and you're unable to see where you're going while getting laser vomited nicely.

Aim for center of mass and call it a day. In fact this reminds me to sell the stupid module when I log in again.

I only use advance zoom on my 1xGauss + 2xERLLas Battlemaster 1G which I take out on Defense after a gate goes down. I find that if you're about 400m from a gate, the advanced zoom lets you see just barely the whole opening, which makes it nice to smack anyone who wants to peek in or hang out on the hills behind the gate. Before CW I barely used the module and would generally forget I even had it equipped.
