I decided to drop on my RVN-H, but somehow ended up in my LRM40 stalker instead. Sadly, that is not my derp moment for the thread. As I'm throwing out LRMs, I decide to check and see if I got a LRM range boost on this mech. I look quickly and I see 1540 by my LRM launchers. "Great, I can hit that guy at 1200m" I think. Whoosh whoosh whoosh with no damage. "Must be ducking behind cover," I think as I switch to a closer, slower target. A bit later I notice my range has decreased to 1340m. "That's odd," I think to myself. A couple salvos later my range is 1260m. That's when it finally hit me. My range hadn't been touched by quirks. It was 1000m all along. I WAS LOOKING AT MY AMMO! In my defense, I've been working 14 hour days, so my brain is pretty fried when I get home. What's your biggest derp moment(s)?
I've only had a few blatant derp moments, and a lot of minor mistakes that I wouldn't qualify Early on when I was a newbie, I was trying to exp up my second mech, a CDA-2B. I actually had it made up in a nasty MLas build, and it was quite capable (even pre-elite, I had a few rounds where I broke 700 damage, and this was in my first month in the game), but I had a game in River City that I'll never forget. I overextended and popped off some harassing shots at the enemy mechs...then idiotically turned my back on them. And by "them", I mean the dual gauss Jager. Which then one-shot me. This was pre-charge mechanic too, otherwise I might've actually survived my stupidity. The only other one was when Wave 1 first came out. I was piloting my Nova and doing damn well...and then I sneezed. And pressed down all my mouse buttons. Durandal has killed Durandal.
I've bought a new mech while piloting a TBR (or some other monster)... admired my lovely paint job in the picture.... pressed launch... Then realised I was in the stock LCT-1M I'd just bought not the pretty mech it was showing me... Go check the stock load out because its "something". Standard engine that goes 142.6KPH, 2 LRM 5's and a medium laser. Not bad... where did it get all that weight this is impressive.... Armour: LL/RL/LA/RA/LT(R)/RT(R) TWO pts, CT/RT/LT FOUR pts, Head a mighty six points. Ummh what can you say about a mech like that?
OH, that reminds me about an unintentional derp! When I first started playing Summoners, a friend set up all of my SMN variants with gear and told me "just launch, you'll see what you get." The first one I launched was an LRM boat...with nothing else. No lasers, no TAG, no cAP. He was laughing at me nonstop...until I broke 800 damage. Just looked at him and said "that the best you got, fucker?" It wasn't. One of the SMNs had nothing but SPLs and a lot of unused tonnage...fucker...
I was reviewing my YT channel making playlists, when I saw this one, I think I qualifies as "derp moment" (poor teammate getting the penalty for TK by my fault )
Well, I was helping a new player for a cpl of hours. We talked about mechs, tactics and dropped in a squad of 4 with 2 others that I've played a lot with. The new guy wondered about light mechs and what was good or bad about each trial, I was set to drop in a Jester but checked the trial spider K in the mechlab to tell him about the loadout. "That mech is not so much fun to begin with, poke with a ERLLAS all through the game and then in the end you can get in and use the quad MG to pick off exposed parts. I'd not recommend that as a first mech, quite frankly I'm not a fan of that at all as it has little effect until the end." We drop, the new guy trying the K model and as the map lights up as Terra I see I've selected the spider as active mech! To high groans and laughs I bemoan my fate and sighs I will do my best but expect to die fast. But instead I do 5 kills and 600 damage. Without arty/air. Double-derp! First, I derp out in picking the wrong mech and then I have to eat my own words.
First drop in a Nova. Alpine. Stock Prime loadout. Played around in the testing grounds quite a bit to get a hang of the heat management. Thought I was ready for some actual pew-pew. Just finished maxing all 3 variants of the Stormcrow. The Crow is fairly zippy after speed tweak. Especially for a 55 ton medium. Remember those testing grounds test runs. Apparently I didn't "run" around too much, 'cause when I dropped I ran my standard "neener-neener-come-and-get-the-crow" squirrel type maneuver. Straight through death valley. Out in the open. Solo. In front of the red Dires and Timbers. Newly hatched Novas don't run so good. Easy targets. Non-speed-tweak Novas out in the open, easier targets. Novas running in a straight line with no zig or zag or weaving, easiest targets. Blowed up before I made the opposite side of the valley. Shortest game to date. Definitely earned the noob votes handed out that day.
Early on while leveling my hunchies I decided to try the 2xSRM6 4xMLas tag in the head, loadout in my 4SP. Right hand lasers on my right mouse button, left on the left with missles&tag macroed on one of the thumb buttons. I PUG drop into frozen city and decide to shadow a cataphract to the engagement, figuring once he starts brawling I can break off and go to work. Cattie decides to take an Awesome head on, so I break off and swing around one of the buildings hoping to catch him in the back..... sweetness entalis, and i come up with a perfect view of his rear CT. I take my alpha and no missles fire.... thinking that I screwed up the mouse config I hit the other thumb button and again nothing.... but wait, TAG fired, and I realise that I equipped streak ammo.... I finish this dismal match with my A$$ being handed over by a jenner pilot.
Nothing like hearing one of your lance mates apologise or rage because they dropped with the wrong ammo. At least you had non ammo weapons!
Checking out the newest trial mechs about six months ago... clicked "ready" as I was checking one out, forgot to switch back to my queued mech before launching because I was alt-tabbed checking MechSpecs. DAMN YOU MECHSPECS!
You know that Target Bug? -> A Mech appears in front of you. It's not marked as friendly in the HUD. Your instinctive Reaction: DIE FOE! Chat: (Teammate) You f***ing Idiot! Why you kill me? Blagg: [oooooooooooooops!....... ]
I've hit a few friendlies while under ECM. The worst was back when HUDs used to fail. Had a friendly accidentally hit me after my HUD failed so I ripped him apart...only to see blue in the name I'd taken out.
I think we've all had our experience with wrong ammo. One time I was switching loadouts in my Ilya to go to 2xAC5 + 2x ERLLas, but I left in all my LBX10 ammo from my previous build. Dropped, realized what I did and apologized to the team for basically dropping in a big, slow, non-ecm RVN-3L. We wound up in Crimson Straight, and I spent most of my time in the tunnel and actually wound up doing pretty decently with ~450 dmg, and 11 Assists. Missed getting the 12 Assist achievement by about 1 second as the final enemy was a Jenner who had jumped off the upper level heading into the water. I was lining up my sights to hit him when he was shot out of the air by a teammate.
I actually think wrong ammo is more common now, because you have big icons that mostly look the same with little tiny lettering.
Lol... totally been there. Changed the Missile loadout form LRM to SRM on one of my Stalkers some months ago... I was wondering why I could only carry like 4 tons of ammo.... dropped 4-5 Matches until I realized I had still 4t SRM-Ammo in my legs. (SInce I don't load ammo on legs any more I didn't check....).
Midnite, if only you could sew your full load while editing... I know you can see it, but not while editing.
