Biggest derp moment?

That time,...

 

Not so long ago we play a match on HPG manifold and in the opening movements, a friendly Warhawk gets singled out by a hungry pack of enemy lights and mediums. As I see the pack battering down the wounded hawk I had to make the decision whether to intervene or not.
Being in a squishy little thing (Mist Lynx or Locust or the sort) I decide getting up close and personal in that pack would not be in my best interest. I did however bring an arty strike and that Warhawk was bound to be dead in 5 seconds anyway so I drop it in the fray hoping to at least damage the enemy pack,...

I was right on the Warhawk being dead in 5 seconds.
My only kill that match,...

TK's and forgetting to load ammo aside (and those happen), this is the most recent one. So we're on frozen city, i'm rushing up the hump in the middle. I see an awesome coming up, I press the 3rd mouse button, which should be linked to my dual AC10s... nothing happens. I dropped in my Cat-A1 instead of the K2. Doh! that almost killed me. Had to run towards the bottom of the city with most of my armor gone. My team did a good job of covering me. I was able to unload a good amount of ammo and even get a kill. All of a sudden i'm starting to get hammered again. A Victor and Stromcrow were able to walk around our right flank and got me in a couple of seconds. We won 12-2... i was the 2.

On the anti derp side.. Playing HPG a month or more ago, we're down to 3 mechs on my team, and 1 on the enemy team. We have an Atlas and i think a Victor, they have a Jagger DD. I'm in Stalker and was running away from the Jagger not even 10 seconds ago and he took everything out except for one of my lasers in the CT. Now it's all quite, movement but no weapons fire. The Atlas, the Victor and the Jagger are all either out of weapons, or out of ammo and trying to ram each other. My Stalker has the lone medium laser FTW!

That reminds me of my ultimate derp day....

Was training myself in poptarting in a Victor as its never been a strength of mine. Three matches in a row I popped up caught sight of a light target and did perfect volleys.

Kill! Kill! Kill!

Wow pop tarting is easy.

Except in each case the light was on our team....

Worse they were in my lance and in my unit.

*facepalm and grovelling apologies*

I think I didn't do any poptarting for a couple of weeks after that!

 

Here's a new take on wrong mech derps. I need to start paying attention to which Nova I'm in and whether or not I can alpha.

Nova-B with 6 ERML? Can!
Nova-S with 6 ERSL, 3xMG, and LB5? Can!
Nova-Prime with 12 ERSL and 4 MG? Can NOT.

 

I almost forgot my greatest derp. This was early 2013, on my new Centurion AL. Drop on Alpine in the far NE base and we start making our way up the first hill before the radio tower and look around.

Hmm...all's clear.

! Hark, who goes there?!

Jäger spotted behind me approaching our base. How'd he get here so fast?!! No time to push R. I dash over hill and turn around and start blasting him.

Really digging in to his torsos with my ERL's. He's not even firing back, team chat blabbering about something.

Finally jäger shoots at me and tries to run away but the bloodlust has taken me. Slide down after him and leg him, strip and murder. DumbFherotBastard has killed Teamate.

...

Glance at team chat. Oh...

I felt so terrible, but we still won and this one Teamate really dug into me.

Couple games later I run into that former Teamate now on other team in Alpine. He's last one alive and trolling me hard, challenges me to a duel to show how bad I am.

My team makes a circle in the snowfield Infront of radio tower and his Yen Lo Wang awaits my CN9-AL.

Epic torso dancing duel resulting in his death and gradual respect for me as I assure him I'm still a dumbass for killing jäger.

I hate it when the mechs get rearranged in your inventory. I have to color code them now, to be sure i don't take the wrong one.
This has lead to many a derp moments...

 

They really need a UI 3.0 with filtering options and favorites/groups.

 

This is why I always check my loadout before a match That, and most of my IS mechs share engines, so it's hard to load in with the wrong one.

My CLAN mechs, however...there are a few landmines in there with weapons missing...

 

Wait until you have 2 of every mech plus the Gold pair.... load up the prime... doh wrong prime!

 

Without my xls list I would have far more such moments. Having duplicate Mechs would mess up my drops entirely.

But here comes the ultimate Protipp: Rename your Mechs according to the loadout. Problem solved.

 

The unpalateable reason why many of us don't use that is "competitive" teams used to use packet sniffers to read mech names as most people kept the original name so they could tell location and mech type... or in your case loadout. Quite a few people I know ended up using gimmick names or the wrong names or even blanking out the name as a counter. In my case I blanked most of mine as they were fit but nowadays I just use a reference name, e.g. all my quirk rebuilt mechs are now called "Upgraded".

No idea if thats still true tbh as I don't regularly play competitive anymore.

PS: When people tell you that its all a skill game at that level.. its really not.

 

But I actually agree with you - my un-built clan mechs all have their original names so it should be hard for me to go to a non fit mech.. righ?Doh.....

Well at first I just gave them the loadout for a name (e.g. 3ERM/2SRM6). A while later I started giving them less accurate names (e.g. SRMBiatch or Lurmadoom). Right now I tend to give them "Codenames" like Nightbird, Hardhat, Phalanx... So even if someone sniffs them, he will not be able to tell what's in it.

Still... it worries me, that there seem to be so many possibilities to cheat in this game.

 

Generally better not to think about it and play to the best of your ability at least thats my view. Fuck them (and report them). It is why I often fraps matches now... report them and let PGI do their work.

 

You don't need to run fraps. PGI records the games anyway. If you have a complaint and tell them who was involved and approx. when, they can literally watch the game again. IIRC they only store 1-2 months.
