A while ago, I promised BlaggZear that I would post some of the more awesome (no pun intended) battlemechs from the Battletech Universe, complete with specs and suggestions on how to import those battlemechs into the current MWO system (that last bit is why I'm posting this here in general discussion as opposed to the Dung Pile). Unfortunately, I was hindered by the fact that I could not find any cool mechs that were sufficiently different from mechs already in this game to justify a post. However, with my recent acquisition of some additional TROs, I have found enough mechs to fulfill my promise; in addition, I will be posting some custom-crafted designs I or my friends made at the end of this post (with pictures that give the general idea) so that I can hopefully spark your imagination. With all that being said, here we go (I'll start with one post to make sure the inserts work, then I'll edit this post to add more); NIGHT WOLF Source-Technical Readout 3085 Class-Assault, 90 tons, General Purpose Engine-XL360 Chassis-Endo Steel Armor-Standard 15.5 tons Heat Sinks-18 Double Weapons Right Torso-1x Heavy Large Laser Right Arm-1x ATM9 w/ 3t of ammo, 1x ERMLas Left Arm-1x ATM9 w/ 3t of ammo, 1x Plasma Cannon w/ 2t of ammo Accessories 4x JJ, ECM, AMS, Targeting Computer Can we put it in MWO? Honestly, I don't think we can-because of MWO's insistence on weapon and equipment hardpoints, I haven't found any 3050 or earlier IS or Clan mech that has the same combo of Energy, Missile, ECM, AMS, and JJ hardpoints. Until they relax the standards on mech construction, I think this will have to remain an idle curiosity. MNL-3L MANGONEL Source-Technical Readout 3085 Class-Heavy, 70 tons, Fire Support/Sniper Engine-Light 350 Chassis-Endo Steel Armor-Ferro Fibrous 7.5 tons Heat Sinks-10 Double Weapons Right Torso-2x Light Gauss Rifles Right Arm-2x ERMlas Left Arm-2x ERMLas Accessories None Can we put it in MWO? Yes-the Cataphract is already available, so go look up any of the GR Cata builds. However, the Cataphract is a terrible sniping chassis-both arms are very low-slung and wide-spread; this forces you to reveal most of your body in order to shoot, and it creates terrible converging issues at long ranges and/or high speeds. The Mangonel solves both problems with a torso mount. However, since Light Gauss Rifles are not yet allowed in MWO, using a dual GR build would be quite tricky. DRT-3S DART Source-Technical Readout 3055 Upgrade Class-Light, 25 tons, Skirmisher Engine-STD 225 Chassis-Standard Armor-Standard 3.5 tons Heat Sinks-10 Single Weapons Head-1x SPLas Center Torso-2x SPLas Accessories None Can we put it in MWO? Yes; I already created a similar build for the 30-ton Spider (my "Shadowblade" build). However, the mounting of the Energy hardpoints on the Shadowblade Spider is annoying-two on the arm and one on the CT is a poor build when attempting to combine your fire from multiple weapons. The Dart has a MUCH better setup, and I think it would be a better choice for a Shadowblade build overall. ANV-3M ANVIL Source-Technical Readout 3055 Upgrade Class-LHeavy, 60 tons, Brawler Engine-STD 300 Chassis-Endo Steel Armor-Standard 9.5 tons Heat Sinks-12 Double Weapons Head-1x MLas Center Torso-1x MLas Right Torso-1x LPLas Left Torso-1x LPLas Accessories ECM, 3x JJ Can we put it in MWO? Yes, for the most part-the Jaegermech already has a 4-Energy-hardpoint variant out. However, there is no heavy mech with this combo of JJ, ECM, and multiple energy hardpoints, so we would have to stick the Anvil itself into the game in order to make it work fully. With that done, here are a couple custom builds that I or my friends made for TT Battletech. Note that the pics I provide will not exactly match the builds we created; they are only meant to give you a general idea. This combination technique is a mechanism I use many times) Armor-Hardened, 38 tons Heat Sinks-15 Double Weapons Right Torso-2x Light PPCs w/ Capacitor Left Torso-2x Light PPCs w/ Capacitor Right Arm-1x Hatchet Left Arm-1x Hatchet Accessories MASC, Supercharger, Arm and Leg Actuator Enhancements, Armored Component upgrades for Engine, MASC, Supercharger, and Hatchets, 1x JJ Can we put it in MWO? Obviously not. I was inspired to make this design after reading the 3055 entry for the Berserker. I loved the idea of a 100-ton monster hurtling across the battlefield at breakneck speeds, shrugging off enemy fire like rain, only to pounce on some poor bastard and smash him to pieces, spitting lightning all the way. So I took a good design and made it better. Note that I made this design a long time ago, so this mech may not fit into the critical slot/weight limits of Battletech. I'll go back and remake it later if that's the case. No. A friend of mine named Sarah made this one. She was a speed junky (NOT THE DRUG) so all of her mechs were built around going as fast as possible. This was one of her more interesting builds-it was an attempt to circumvent the firepower and durability restrictions on light mechs.
The specific models may not be well known, but the concepts behind them are. Aside from the custom builds, I tried to find mechs that fulfilled all previous requirements, but that had a decent chance of either being introduced into MWO, or could already be approximated by existing mechs. Coolness came first, though.
