I think we should be clear on what we talk about. If we are talking what is best then clearly ECM is better than anything else. Now if we talk about fun, then if you enjoy your Kit Fox without armor and four flamers, who am I to dispute that for YOU? But let me tell you a little story: Once after a missclick when striping "modules" I entered battle in a CMD with NO armor, something I realized as soon as I went down a canyon and suddenly heard "Critical Damage"... made for a very intense and fun game, knowing anyone who shot at me would kill me. But no I didn't post the build dor others to use and no it wasn't a good build, oh and while I was on edge and did decently given the circumstances I did die soon to an AC10 shot in "da chest" so yes I was a dead weight for my team at 40 or so grand total damage. That was a mistake, but since I play with other people who ussually prefer to win than losing I try to use decent builds out of respect for the rest of players, hence me joking about shoting Kit Foxes without ECM, after all the Kit Fox without ECM -selfish as it is- is more usefull than a destroyed Kit Fox
While i say i think people should use what they find fun instead of having to use what is optimal, i will note that i don't really approve troll builds or outright stupidity (like intentionally leaving armor out, assaults armed with only two medium lasers...). Accidents, like forgetting armor, happen and that's OK, everyone has those days. This is a team game after all, while people obviously play for their own fun, i reckon most want to win and so helping their team out is in their interest (and fun), and troll builds and stupidity don't really help with that. My builds are how i prefer them, and how i find them fun, but they're always useful in some role or other, and i strive to use them as well as i can. So i play combat Kit Foxes... and i try to maximize my survival and damage i deal. I always take the game seriously and play to win, even if my builds are not optimal, min-maxed or part of standard meta. Anyway, i find the Raven and many other IS lights to be considerably better ECM platforms due to their speed, a Kit Fox with an ECM and max armor is still vulnerable, and a high priority target without enough speed to get away. To me it seems rather many Kit Fox pilots who use ECM use it selfishly, to cover their own ass and not caring one bit about the team. OK, perhaps they find the additional defense (on top of a paper armor and snail-speed) fun but that's a borderline case of outright stupidity given the high priority of ECM platforms... To be honest, i'd often prefer a player who is good at combat instead of these solo-ECM guys who rush onward to "scout" and die. I see those often. Why bring ECM if you ain't going to make good use of it? Re: usefulness of ECM. I didn't say it is useless in direct fire fight, just less useful. While finishing off weak enemies is good, the damage data is not essential if people use common sense and focus on targets. Of course, i'm making an assumption here that people actually use common sense... which is admittedly rather rare. So perhaps it is not "considerably less useful" just somewhat less useful. Oh, and give me XP and C-bills for providing ECM cover and i'll start using the C-arm considerably more. I have to consider those at the moment when making builds.
I use the S-Fox with the ECM-Arm with both ECM and AMS. But i also run Dakka-Fox on the Prime, where i prefer the Dakka on the Arm than on the Torso, and Quadstreaks-Fox on the D without ECM. Why do i have to load the C-Arm on every of my Foxies? Yes i always use the C-Arm on my S-Fox for serious Team Protection Playstyle, but i also want to have some other fun builds, which can kill Enemies faster and that's also supporting the Team in a more offensive Playstyle. Why not? Is it so much worse? What i see more important is the S-Omnipod for the Sidetorsos for loading Jumpjets aka better Agility
If you want ECM so badly, take a Mech that has one. Don't make a general statement that anyone playing the Mech without this or that is not a team player, blah blah blah. If you are playing in a team, you can always make that request of your teammate but don't criticize people who do not design Mechs your way.
There's plenty of things that SHOULD give out c-bills (ECM should have some bonuses other than C-ECM too), but that would involve role warfare which...well, you know.
In my honest opinion, unless that the person doesnt have idea how the ECM works, if the person chooses to not place the single most victory-oriented item of the game, that only weight 1.5 tons and and takes 2 slots, in a mech, u are failing ur team in part. I agree that u may want to play lone-wolf way, but there is no way u can say me that for a team, or even for urself, its more important 1-2 weapon hardpoints in a light mech that an ECM module, cause that makes no sense.
In the case at hand it's even worst: clan ECM takes 1 ton and 1 slot to carry, the thing is almost free, the only real sacrifice is that then the arm only has 1 offensive hardpoint instead of 2. People are right in that if they want to be silly they have the right to be so but when they chose the objectively worst option for their team's chances at wining they should at least accept people complaining to them.
This is what u get for learning to press J and counter enemy ECMs, and not only having the ECM in Disrupt all the time: Its listed as C-ECM, the C-ECM assist must be other thing, pobably taking lock out of a team member. Not sure really.
