Who here has purchased themselves a Star Citizen backing pack?

Bolt has gotten me looking at the game in a strong way and at first I was thinking 325 (the upgraded 300 military version) but now I'm thinking Freelancer so that I could earn some bling bling, be combat capable, carry a second pilot with me if I chose and or maybe even do some bounty hunting?

Im taking a poll here to gauge popularity for this project.

Bought a Digital Freelancer. And an Origin 325a. When they released info on customizing NPCs in your character slots I swapped the 325a for an Arbiter Pack (325+character slot). The monkey got me ...

And speaking of "customizing NPCs", ever since the info has been out, character packs have been sold (or swapped) at an increased pace - so those who voted "soon" better keep an eye on it. I figue once they are gone, you will be able to buy pledge ships for when the game releases - but no more alpha and beta slots.
I expect the next big wave of sales is going to start in the next few days - October 10th is the first anniversary of SC on Kickstarter. They will probably offer some more time limited sales to feed the monkey ... ^^

I was looking at the 325 but the Freelancer is looking more and more appealing. Not sure I want to get a character pack (whatever that is) as you should be able to customize your character when the game goes gold anyways.

Tread Lightly with your Money, Gentelmen. 72 mechs doesn't make me a happy mech warrior. Neither will ships.

Well if you pledge over at RSI there are several possibilities: You could buy the "Origin 325a fighter". That will include the ship, the basic hangar, and some insurance. Or you could buy the "Arbiter" package. This will come with the ship, the basic hangar, and some insurance. And in addition: Some in-game currency, the single player part of Star Citizen (Squadron 42, effectively a single player game on top of the MMO), SC - the persitent universe, and alpha- and beta access.

That's what I meant with the character pack ... one is just the ship, the other is the ship AND access to the game. Which, with just a ship, you will have to acquire in another way :) so I hope you got at least one purchase that includes "Star Citizen Digital Download" and not just the bare ship.

But the reason why I swapped my "ship only" package (I already got one character slot in my digital freelancer package, so a second smaller ship was all I thought I "needed" ^^) for a second one (Arbiter) with a second character slot - the reason for that is what I heard how they are going to handle those multiple characters.
    I think it's a really great idea.
Basically you have 3 possibilities - your choice:
    - Keep all playable characters on one game account. Log in as your pirate alter ego, or your law-biding merchant.
    - Split them into several accounts. Let your wife have one, too. If she shoots some missiles at your freelancer you know you forgot your wedding day... ;)
    - Keep the playable characters (let's say you got 2 like me) on the same account AND turn one of them into an NPC.

An NPC ? Why would you do that ? Because I got a freelancer, a 2 Person ship. So I'd have to take a friend or hire an NPC to fly at full efficiency.
By turning one character slot of mine into an NPC, I already have my co-pilot. But it gets better: Since it is a character slot I can create that NPC the same way I would create my own Avatar. Fully customized looks. If you're a space trucker and you want Dolly Parton - go for it. If you want Elvis ... ^^
But wait, it STILL gets better. Remember we used a paid for character slot, one that could be used (if accounts were split) for his own game access ? Even as an NPC it has game access. So when you're flying with your co-pilot NPC and a friend of yours wants to join, he can log into your account and take over as that NPC. 2 people playing on that account now, since it has 2 playable slots. Your friend has to leave ? As he logs off, your co-pilot is turning NPC again.

For a game that will have a vast array of multi-user ships, I think this solution is just brilliant. And who knows, if NPCs aquire skill over time, then having your own permanent Co-Pilot will definately be a good thing. It has been hinted that it could be so, from remarks like hiring more or less skilled NPCs.

You're absolutely right, as well as completely wrong. You're right that getting hyped about a game in development will surely lead to disappointment. But you're wrong too because SC is much more open as MWO. You're not locked in arena mode, since the game is sand boxy (with all the pros and cons) you can always try out something different.

So I'm permitting myself to get moderately hyped ^^

I think the signs are better. As a rather small studio PGI took a big franchise and tried to turn it into a big game. The track record for "big franchise" game conversions is generally speaking rather bleak - more failures than success stories.

On the other hand we have a man with a proven track record of being able to deliver, and he promised to take all the great things of his former games, add new and exciting stuff and top it off with incredible immersion. And no publisher Mickey Mouse, or "canon" franchise to watch out for.
Yes. I think the signs are better.

I believe this game will be a big success, but still i wait until the development gets into Open Beta Status, when i can judge if its worth to invest money into it. I think the Fan-Community is big enough, so i can save my money for now. The Pre-Order Bonus-Packages are nice, but i can go without that Extra Stuff and still be happy. If the final Product is really awesome i'm ready to spend a lot of money.

For LoL e.g. i already spent 200 Bucks (over 3yrs) for the devs just because they did a great job, even after Launch with regular updates on Game-Mechanics, Looks&Feel and Events. For MWO i am still reluctant to spend much money. I gave 50 bucks for having enough Mechbays and some skins to play around, but now i want to see the real good stuff, before spending any more of my little money. :p

Star Citizen has a good chance to become something awesome, but i still have my doubt, that Roberts can implement all the ideas he has. And he has plenty of them, which seems to be insane! We will see.

In the meantime i recommend you to play this:

Well they said the dogfighting module will be available this December. That will give most of us the opportunity to take our expensive ships out for a spin.
And oh, the drama that is going to happen. Hornet owners will start crying bitter tears as Origin 325a's score hits. Constellations will get shot up by their own escort P52. Freelancers will fly with half their weapon slots empty. Bombers will not fly at all (since the models aren't finished yet). Avengers will fly in a perfectly straight line. And Auroras will fly tho nobody will give a damn ...

I think they just sold ships for more than 1 million $$$ in the last 2 or 3 days. They had 4 "new" types of ships up:
The Aurora LN, a basic fighter. Some people might have bought those.
The Avenger, which has been around a while but now it came with a Hangar package and can actually be looked at. I suppose that one was a best seller.
And the 2 most expensive ships of the sale:
The Gladiator, a light bomber and candidate for conversion into a salvager.
And the Retaliator, a heavy bomber (looks vaguely like an XB70 Valkyrie).
In $$$ those might account for half of the sales, and that makes me think that all those people who spent 1000+ $$$ for Idris Corvettes might find thmselves between a rock and a hard place. Bombers are designed to take out capital ships, and the Idris, tho "only" a corvette, counts as such ^^
Should be fun to watch when swarms of Bombers go a-hunting Idris Corvettes. ^^

Freelancer pilot what what?!??!?! Excited for the long term end game rather than the dog-fighting module. I've got a 325A for that :p

You still can't buy any weapons that would fit on the Freelancer, that's why :)
But maybe they will add some for the dog fighting module.

Oh, and speaking of the 325a: Did they just steal our missiles ? Or were the missile racks empty before yesterday's patch ?

My favorite quote from Chris Roberts, "No one has ever accused me of having small dreams."

    LOL

The game looks phenomenal. However, still being poor, I am hesitant to throw too much money at him... So many incredible concepts from a legendary game dev, but, it's hard to go out too far on the limb on faith.

I get my bonus here in two weeks and I'll prolly at least get the Digital Merc backer package...

I haven't pledged, but have vaguely kept up with it. I'm interested, but poor and time is a luxury for me.

The difference between PGI and RSI, is that Chris Roberts has been doing this for many, many more years, and has a proven track record of completing top-shelf quality games. I would back Roberts if I thought time would allow me to play both consistently. I don't have to worry about it, as they've passed the $21 million marker anyway, from last I heard.

22 million 700k ... thats a mere 300.000 shy of what CR said he would need in order to make the game with all the bells and whistles he imagined (it's actually 20M net, but the additional 3M are because of what Paypal & Friends are siphoning off for their services).
And from the way people continue to throw money at the screen (myself included) I really doubt that lack of funding will be able to stop this game from being released.

The next 2 month will be especially hard - the dogfighting module has been announced for December and I think it's a fair bet that most of their resources are working towards that goal now. That's fine - only now I need to be even more patient before I can admire my bomber in the hangar.
