I took a quick look at what this game was about, started to realize what it was, then immediately closed my browser. My children need to eat, dammit!

Looks very interesting, but I do not have the time nor money to invest into this game at the moment. I will be keeping a close eye on it though.

BTW Michael, if you're going to pay into Star Citizen early you should definately get the Freelancer. I want that ship. It can do everything.

Agreed, that was the first ship I ever bought but then I melted it down.

    Constellation (Trading, Merchant, Exploration)
    Super Hornet (Combat)
    Cutlass (Piracy)
    Aurora LN (Learning the game)

    All with LTI

Yes. Well, the Cutlass is currently a statue in my hanger since the 3D artist is working on it but the rest of them are sitting in my hanger and I can run around in them and go PEW PEW PEW and pretend I am some swaggering sexy pirate smuggler type.

A statue, that's nice. I don't even have a statue for some of my ships :)
    - Freelancer (now with working ramp)
    - 315p (used to be a 325a but was melted down like thousands of its brothers after the Hornet commercial for this one: )
    - Super Hornet
    - Gladiator and
    - Retaliator (a moment of Bomber madness - I thought about reselling them on ebay to recoup some money, but haven't felt bad enough yet to do it ^^)
Also LTI on all of them - although that's a hull insurance only, really. Because realistically speaking WHO is taking his ship out in stock configuration ? Everyone will have to buy additional insurance for modules, freight, low sector security - the hype about LTI is totally unwarranted if you think about it for a moment.

The game seems like one of those impossibly ambitious games, and it also seems like it has a lot of potential for griefing.

Can anybody link me a short version of what all the game's supposed to be like? I haven't found much outside their website and I find it almost impossible to navigate.

It's actually 2 games: A single player campaign ("Squadron 42"), similar to Wing Commander, with a storyline and a military career. You an play through the storyline (50 missions or so, with more missions being made available through update packs) and enter the second part "Star Citizen" which is a persistent multiplayer universe. You'll have a ship, some cash and some idea how to fly if you do it that way. On the other hand you can skip the single player part completely as well - I think you'll still get a starter ship and some cash.

Most people are probably looking forward to Star Citizen which will be a human empire in turmoil and 3 or 4 alien races, some of which are nicer than others. The SC universe will start with 110+ star systems that are connected by jump points.
A star system may contain multiple points of interest - several planetary bases, asteroid bases and gas mining, a race track :) or military.

There will be dynamic content for exploration, salvaging of alien technology or derelct space ships. You'll be able to choose a viable career as a pirate (meaning you'll have bases that are open to you because you're a pirate or a smuggler, instead of barring you from every location). Think "Privateer" or "Elite" for the Star Citizen part.

So far, with 26 millions already pledged, the chances of this game not being released due to monetary difficulties are pretty much zero.
Also Chris Roberts isn't a newbie game maker. He has a track record of successful games in this very genre - and now he can do it as he likes, without regard to publishers' bureaucracy.
    Yup, it's exciting :)

Yeah they said somewhere that 23,000,000 was needed to make the game and they have exceeded that now. They have ZERO publisher interference due to the private funding and they listen to their community quite well. There are some stories of amazing Customer Service events happening and the game isn't even in an alpha yet.

While nothing can replace giant stomping robots I am really looking forward to Star Citizen.

I forgot, regarding griefing: Chris Roberts said he will build the game in a way that will make griefing possible although he dislikes it, because he thinks that mechanisms that prevent it will be more damaging to the game experience all the time and to everyone than isolated griefing by individuals towards individuals, sometimes.
That being said, he also stated that they will make it so that griefing, while possible, will be discouraged. They want to implement ways that punish it rather than inhibit it. I think that's a good way, because active "anti-griefing code" can also only prevent active griefing, not the passive aggressive behaviour that seems to be so rampant everywhere.
If you can occassionally shoot someone who's just acting like a total jackass that's just fine with me.

Oh boy, they are going to make a limited ship sale with life time insurance for everyone. I fear for my wallet. Although I might get off cheap, melting my 315p and getting a 350r instead. Starfarer is one big (literally :D) temptation tho...

Yeah I really kinda like the Star Farer; it is like mid range between the Constellation and the Idris and is much more the size of Serenity than either. I am kind of a Firefly fanboi so want a Serenity like ship for myself.

That is nothing. I know a guy who is about to go balls deep on this with a $1250.00 purchase (Assuming he can get it in the sale). That is SERIOUS commitment.
